When going to travel with a small child for the first time, parents have many doubts, especially when it comes to air travel. At what age are kids allowed on the plane, what are the features of purchasing tickets for them, are there rules for carrying children’s baggage, what documents are needed for a child, how does the flight affect children’s health, what can and should we take to the salon?
For a comfortable and safe flight with children, undoubtedly, everything should be worked out in advance so as not to encounter unpleasant surprises later, including already on the plane.
How does an airplane flight affect children?
Usually pediatricians do not see obstacles for air travel with children older than 3 months. In the case of special need, it is considered possible to go on a flight with an infant who has reached the age of 4-6 weeks. Doctors motivate the restriction by the fact that the child during this period is actively adapting to the external environment, and the flight will create additional pressure for him, putting at risk of encounters with viruses and bacteria that are in the crowded confined space of the cabin. If the day of departure is near, and the child is feeling unwell (ear problems, cough, intestinal upset, etc.), you should definitely consult a doctor.
In general, children of any age feel good in flight: infants mostly sleep (with a break for feeding), older children need to do something, taking care of a new typewriter or doll, coloring, compact game. If the child is already able to understand some rules, it is worthwhile to tell him in advance how the flight will take place, what can be seen through the porthole, how to behave in an airplane, which cannot be done. During the flight, you should quietly and patiently communicate with the child, answering all questions so that his behavior is controlled and does not disturb other passengers. If the flight is long, the baby will be useful to sleep.
What you need to take flight
Depending on the child’s age, it is necessary to know in advance whether there will be a baby cradle on board the aircraft, what are the rules for carrying a pram, what can be brought into the cabin as baby food.
In flight for the child may need:
- warm clothing or baby blanket;
- antipyretics, antihistamines;
- stock of disposable diapers, pampers and wet wipes, travel pot;
- lollipops (better on a stick) at the moments of take-off and landing, so as not to lay
- ears (the baby can be given a chest, a pacifier, or drink from a bottle).
If parents carefully study the rules of the airline in terms of flight conditions with the child, we can expect that the journey will be comfortable, because many airlines provide these passengers with a range of services, and knowing their list in advance, you can take care of what is missing in flight.
